UK Home Secretary David Blunkett is planning a radical extension to existing electronic tagging and monitoring systems, floating the use of satellite tracking to monitor the movement of sex offenders, and the deployment of lie detector tests to check that the subjects aren't breaking the terms of their release. The satellite systems are to be tested on serious offenders later this year."

The Amnesty International (AI) Report 2004 stated that the automatic and excessively lengthy detention of asylum-seekers in Malta was critisised by national and international bodies. It also said that the conditions of detention in facilities in Malta holding asylum-seekers and migrants fell short of international standards. AI claimed that new information emerged reinforcing concern that a number of individuals among a group of some 220 Eritreans deported from Malta to Eritrea in 2002 were detained and tortured on return on which an inquiry is being run presently in Malta. "

After completing the six-week Youth Gun Violence Program, one Chicago youth chose to do just that.
The program links youth who are convicted of weapons violations with victims of gun violence. Through face-to-face meetings, the young offenders learn how a single gunshot can change a life forever."
