"Since June, nine municipalities in Monmouth and Ocean counties have adopted ordinances restricting where adult pedophiles can live, while four more have public hearings planned to discuss similar policies.

Proponents of the law say the restrictions, commonly called pedophile-free zones, provide children with an additional barrier against sexual predators, some of whom are considered to have a high risk of striking again.

Critics, however, say restricting where sex offenders can live would likely deter them from registering their home addresses with municipal police departments, a mandatory disclosure under Megan's Law that allows the public to know whether a pedophile has moved next door or into the neighborhood."
