Supported by the No Place for a Child CoalitionMPs slam Home Office for detaining children
MPs say that the Home Office is in contravention of a series of national and international legal guidelines and is failing to protect children who are being detained in the UK as part of the immigration process. This report, supported by the No Place for a Child campaign, condemns the increase in the use of detention over the last five years, and the fact that as many as 2000 children are detained every year. The report also highlights the growing concerns over the psychological and physical impact of detention on children. The MPs call on the Home Secretary to end the detention of children for immigration purposes and introduce an alternative approach to families who have failed in their asylum claim, based on meeting protection needs and allowing families to plan their return supported by an independent caseworker.
