"RUBIN "Hurricane" Carter -- immortalised by songwriter Bob Dylan after he served 20 years in prison for three murders he did not commit -- has called on Australia to revamp its laws on DNA evidence. Crime scene evidence is destroyed once a person has been convicted and has exhausted all rights of appeal in the courts. "For Australia not to have DNA in the criminal justice system, where it can exonerate innocent people or convict the guilty people, is a step backwards."
