"PLANS to enforce strategic police forces across England and Wales have bitten the dust after the Government said it would not seek to push forced mergers through. Both ACPO and the Association of Police Authorities said the merger plan could not go ahead after Cumbria and Lancashire constabularies withdrew their plans to voluntarily amalgamate. However, Tony McNulty, police minister, told delegates at a Local Government Association conference on Wednesday that the Government would retain the power to enforce mergers if necessary. He said that enforced mergers are 'not on the agenda', but added the Home Secretary believes that strategic mergers are the right way to improve the police service." [Sub Required]
