A CITY girl's marriage was annulled by the High Court after she claimed she was tricked into wedlock by her family. The woman – known only as NS – said she was lured to Pakistan with the false promise of a holiday when she finished her GCSE examinations. She claimed she then had her passport taken away from her and was subjected to moral blackmail by her parents, who said they would kill themselves if she did not marry the cousin she had never met. After spending months in a remote part of Pakistan, the girl finally agreed to go through with the wedding in 2003 – when she was just 17. Mr Judge Munby last week granted the woman – now 20 – a decree nisi of nullity, declaring the marriage null and void. Her solicitor spoke about the difficulties her client faced in getting the case to court and issued advice to other young Asians who find themselves in the same situation. Each year in Britain, an estimated 300 young women and men are thought to be forced into marriage – however, campaigners believe this figure is a gross underestimate of the problem."
