"Software experts are welcome to tell the government how ‘data mining’ techniques should take advantage of advanced software to home in on criminals, the Home Office said. Announcing plans to use Big Brother-style software for public safety, officials said advances in IT offer a “huge opportunity” to adopt ‘profiling’ techniques to catch crooks in the act. In the same way that banks use software to identify unusual spending patterns, the government wants police and its agents, like HMRC, to be armed with the same “new tools.” The online consultation, which is open to members of the public and interested parties, asks whether there is “greater scope” for authorities to use the profiling process to verify datasets."
