Tom de Castella visits Essex to find out what this means for young people inside and outside the school gates. Pupils and staff didn't quite know how to treat Tina Smith when she arrived at Tabor Science College in Braintree two years ago. As the Essex school's first on-site police officer, she wasn't too sure how to act either. "The young people were very wary of me," recalls Smith. "Every time I went to talk to one of them they thought: 'Oh no, she's about to arrest someone'." But since then the relationship with the pupils and teachers has blossomed. "They see me as fair and that I'm not here to criminalise them," she says."
