ABSTRACT: In view of the prominence of immigration issues in the 2005 general election, research evidence on policy initiatives is at a premium. This article argues that, despite claims of evidenced-based principles, the Home Office has been selective in its investigations. In particular, the authors argue for a full-scale study of the innovative `work-visa holder' status given to the last cohort of Sangatte immigrants, and report on their qualitative investigation of the subsequent careers and experiences of 15 Iraqi Kurds granted work-visas in December 2002.
