"IAS expresses concern about the possible treatment of persons seeking to come to the UK by unsupervised private contractors in France and Belgium. IAS Chief Executive Keith Best has responded to the Home Office consultation to introduce private contractors acting alone no longer under the direct scrutiny of the Immigration Service in searching, fingerprinting and detaining persons in the so-called “juxtaposed control zones” operating in France and Belgium. Under 1999 legislation these zones in effect are designated parts of the UK subject to UK law – but what of those who are the subject of the attention of the immigration authorities?"
