"A new $4 million research project to develop a "cybernose" could hold the key to the detection of explosives and bio-hazards in the world's airports. In a joint undertaking, the CSIRO, Australian National University and Monash University are involved in the development of an electronic instrument that will allow scientists to harness the sophisticated sense of smell of dogs or insects. CSIRO project team leader Stephen Trowell says the technology could eventually be used to detect explosive devices in aircraft luggage, thwarting the use of liquid or gel explosives such as those reported this week to have been used in suicide attacks on trans-Atlantic flights."
