"AN Icelandic initiative to fight the battle against litter and vandalism is being looked into for the villages of Tatworth and Forton. South Somerset district councillor Andrew Turpin, who lives in South Chard, came up with the idea of employing young people to keep the streets clean and free from weeds, following a discussion with a resident who had recently returned from Reykjavik. [..] One resident told him that in Iceland the streets are weed, graffiti, litter and vandalism free, thanks to an initiative in which youngsters clean the streets under adult supervision as well as being paid a wage. Cllr Turpin told the News: "I understand that not only are the streets of Reykjavik immaculately clean but the young people grow up with a pride in their community and would never dream of dropping litter.
