"The Refugee Council believes that everyone has a right not to live in poverty and to contribute to the community in which they live. Having a job plays an important role in being able to achieve this. At present, a majority of asylum seekers are prevented from working. Although they are able to do voluntary work, the Refugee Council is concerned that excluding asylum seekers from paid employment leads to them becoming socially isolated. It also damages their longer term chances of successfully integrating as refugees. This policy paper outlines the current context as it relates to the work concession for asylum seekers. It provides a response to each policy before making a set of recommendations."
