"Ensuring that asylum seekers have access to quality legal advice is a priority for Asylum Aid’s policy work. We are aware that that many individuals who have previously claimed asylum, experienced poor quality advice or a change in circumstances, are continuing to experience difficulties accessing appropriate legal advice, in spite of their unsettled status. A significant proportion of asylum seekers living in London are thought to be in this situation. Recognising the scale and urgency of the problem, and likely consequences of future reforms in the asylum and legal aid sector, Asylum Aid and the Mayor's office/Greater London Authority funded research to further explore the potential of two practical proposals for improving asylum seekers’ access to appropriate and timely legal advice in London:

1. Establish an on-line information exchange/clearing house service for connecting asylum seekers in London with appropriate legal advice and representation

2. Establish a programme of outreach advice surgeries to help marginalised and vulnerable asylum seekers in London access quality legal advice in locations appropriate to their needs.
