"There are literally thousands of types of guns, and many will be used in the commission of a crime. The three main types of firearms the average officer will have to deal with at the crime scene are: shotguns, rifles and handguns. To get the biggest bang you can from firearms evidence, however, officers must know what types of information forensic analysts are able to retrieve from a recovered weapon and live or spent bullets found at the crime scene."
