"THE quality of the statistics gathered by the HM Inspectorate of Constabulary in its report on merging forces is 'questionable' and provides 'very little hard evidence' to support the conclusions it makes, according to a university professor. Tony Lawrance, a professor of statistics at the University of Warwick, said the report Closing the gap did not do enough to back up its conclusion that forces in England and Wales with 'over 4,000 officers or 6,000 staff in total tended to meet the [required] standard in protective services'.
