"A researcher at Binghamton University is developing digital forensic technology that will help prosecute child pornographers. She has found that every camera leaves a unique imprint on photographs. Fridrich says the imprint can be used to identify the camera the picture came from, just as forensic investigators can tell which gun a bullet came from.
She explains that each digital camera has its own sensor inside that projects a code, called noise, onto every picture it takes.
In a child pornography investigation, the code could be used by police and prosecutors to prove whose camera took illegal pictures. Two patents for digital forensic technology are pending. Fridrich and her team are also working on ways to use the same technology with scanners and digital video cameras." [Snippet]
