"The Government often uses tough language to emphasise the punitive aspect of their anti-social behaviour policies, at the expense of highlighting the extensive developments in support and public services that are the foundation of creating real change. Over 125 years experience of working with some of the most disadvantaged children and families in the country has taught The Children’s Society that the most important aspect of a child’s life is the quality of his or her relationship with a responsible adult. Our recent research, in which 8,000 14-16-year-olds responded to the questions, ‘What makes for a good life?’ and ‘What detracts from a good life?’ and said family and friends are the most critical determining factors."
