"Megan's Law was hailed upon its creation 10 years ago, but legislators today say more is needed to protect children from sex offenders. Some say Jessica's Law fills that void. The Megan's Law Web site includes about 67,000 of the 100,000 sex offenders who should be registered. The Department of Justice also says the whereabouts of about 20 percent of the listed offenders is unknown, so some may have moved from the community where they are listed. California sex offenders this year could face strict new limits on where they can carry on their lives, spurring debate across the state and here in the Coachella Valley. Legislators have written a proposed law they say would strengthen Megan's Law, which a decade ago set out to, among other things, create a database of all sex offenders living in the United States. While a step in the right direction, officials say the law doesn't go far enough."
