"The Home Office has announced that a vehicle number plate scanning system which has boosted police arrest rates is to receive £15 million funding.
Over 13,000 arrests have been made by automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) teams - an arrest rate nine times higher than the police national average - and £8 million worth of drugs and property seized during a year-long pilot of ANPR technology in 23 police forces.
The Home Office, through the Police Standards Unit (PSU), is inviting all forces to submit bids for a share of £15 million funding to boost national ANPR capability."
