"Britain supports greater EU cooperation on crime-fighting and asylum and is not being forced into a rearguard action against harmonisation measures it thinks go too far, government minister Caroline Flint says.
Despite opposition accusations that Prime Minister Tony Blair is preparing to toss away a key area of sovereignty, Flint said the government would not flinch from making the case for closer working within the EU where it met Britain's interests.
'There is a very solid case to be made for EU cooperation,' the Home Office minister told Reuters in an interview on Friday. 'It is not giving up our borders, it is not giving up our legal systems but it is finding practical ways in which we can work together.'"
