"Polynesian street gangsters' fascination with American "thug life" is threatening to turn New Zealand suburbs into violent ghettos. That's the warning from police youth officer Nick Tuitasi, just back from a conference in New York about youth at risk. "In the (American) projects, they live in their own world. That is what is happening to our young Maori and Pacific Island kids. They believe they live in ghettos, and behave that way. They have a them-and-us mentality.
"Everyone in the projects is 'Us', and everyone outside is 'The other team'."
