"THEY are crudely made, potentially deadly and have been found in prisoners' cells and hideaways. More than 130 of these weapons among them sharpened toothbrushes, drill bits or disposable razors melted into brush handles were found among 1134 contraband seizures at the state's nine correctional service facilities.
The 2003/2004 Department of Correctional Services figures show the highest number of weapons, or 'shivs' as they are commonly called, were located at Mobilong Prison. Just two were seized at the Adelaide Remand Centre last financial year. ,
'These are typical examples of what we collect all the time,' Department of Correctional Services spokesman Bill Power said.
'They are intended to do some harm or be used by someone who feels they need protection, which is the mentality you get out in the community and that's transposed into the prison system.' "
