THE Howard Government continues its flirtation with biometrics technology, outlaying more than $2.7 million on a six-month trial of an 'identity assurance' border control system at Sydney Airport. The system captures three types of biometrics - an iris scan, fingerprints, and a facial recognition image. These templates will be held in a database for matching purposes.
Immigration Minister Amanda Vanstone said the pilot would test the department's capacity to capture, store, retrieve and match a range of biometric data in a real-life setting.
The trial involves two groups of 'volunteers' - incoming visitors referred by Customs officers for further investigation, and people coming from Africa as refugees. "
