"State Troopers now have a new tool to crack down on illegal vehicles on the road. It's called the Mobile Plate Hunter and it allows State Police to scan as many as 16,000 license plates in one day. Using infared technology, video cameras on the top of the trooper cars can read the license plates of vehicles going by. 'The computer takes that pictures, determines what the plate is, determines the numbers on the plate and does an instant check to figure out whether that vehicle is stolen or New York State wants those plates back,' said Trooper Frank Grossmann.

Grossman says the Mobile Plate Hunter is revolutionary. It allows troopers to produce tickets with just the push of a few buttons. They can take pictures that can later be used in court. The mobile plate hunter can scan plates an Amber Alert goes out for a missing child or when police are searching for a bank robbery suspect. Grossmann says it will change the way troopers do their jobs. He also says it will take a lot of bad guys off the road. he old way of doing things we could check a few dozen per vehicle...checking thousands of plates per shift... Their chances of getting caught are going to go from very, very low to extremely high.'" [Snippet]
