"The discovery that a set of protective equipment was flawed has led to a shake-up of the body armour industry, with a re-evaluation of the materials used and the standards set to test the kit. Police Review reported last year that a Met officer who had bought his own set of body armour had been given a replacement by the manufacturer after it was discovered that a material used in the vest was flawed (PR 10 and 17 December 2004). The vast majority of UK officers who routinely wear body armour are not affected by the defect as the vests supplied by forces, and approved by the Home Office Scientific Development Branch, do not contain the suspect material called Zylon. However, the controversy surrounding the material has had far-reaching repercussions for the multi-million pound body armour industry, particularly in the US, where the majority of vests are sold.
