"The Ministry of the Interior has repeatedly expressed concern about asylum seekers disappearing from reception centres during the asylum application process. This year there have been more than 1,100 such cases. Virtanen says that it is impossible for officials to do anything about the disappearances, because refugee reception centres are not enclosed institutions; asylum seekers can come and go through the front door as they please. She also notes that while many asylum-seekers disappear from Finland, just as many applicants who have disappeared from other EU countries show up in Finland. 'The matter should be resolved at the European level.'"
