"Schools in the Australian state of New South Wales are under new orders to promote respect, responsibility and decency as the new school year begins . All schools, public and private, must report to the state government on their compliance with the directive, which requires the singing of the national anthem at school assemblies, teaching Australian values and having standard school rules, The Australian reported.
'Respect and responsibility are at the center of our plan to promote a culture of decency, community pride and mutual respect,' said Premier Morris Iemma. 'These values start with parents in the home -- but schools are integral to reinforcing these lessons,' he added.
He said annual reports would be made available to parents and the community so they could see how the schools were promoting the values.
The move follows a spate of racially motivated violence between white Australians and immigrants from the Middle East last month. The riots shocked many Australians and led to stronger efforts to promote mutual respect and cohesion among different segments of the country`s population." [Snippet]
