"Britain's prison system is a 'shambles' with suicides, widespread drug-taking and half of inmates re-offending on release, the Liberal Democrats claimed. Their home affairs spokesman, Mark Oaten, said the problems of prisons had to be addressed if Britain was to get crime under control. And he called for major investment in the training and education of prisoners as well as a 'complete rethink' of the kind of people sent to jail.
