"The assault against violent crime must be stepped up, the home secretary has said. In an interview with the Mirror on Friday, Charles Clarke said the government has 'a long way to go on violent crime'. His pledge of action not words will be seen as a sideswipe at his predecessor, David Blunkett. 'I don't believe it is enough to make a stirring speech about how terrible things are, you have to change the state of affairs. And that is what I am determined to do,' Clarke said."
