"A giant police force serving Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk looked increasingly likely as Home Secretary Charles Clarke gave his backing to the idea. Mr Clarke's statement adds to the growing sense of inevitability over a merger, which would be the latest move towards regionalisation of the public and emergency services. It follows the news this month that Cambridgeshire, Norfolk and Suffolk police forces could have their cash settlements slashed by the Government to pressurise them into amalgamating.
