"CONTROVERSIAL plans to reduce the sentences of convicted criminals if they testify against major underworld associates are to be unveiled by Scottish ministers.
The move, which is to be included in proposals for the Police Bill later this month, is being heralded by the Executive as a powerful additional weapon in the fight against serious organised crime.
The revelation has sparked concern among victims? groups and the legal profession. But the plan to give more criminals incentives to become ?supergrasses? was defended by justice minister Cathy Jamieson, who said new formal powers would increase prosecutions against ?some of the most evil people in society ? drug dealers, drug traffickers, money launderers and others involved in organised criminal activity.
