"RCMP media relations officers in B.C. should consider being less helpful to reporters in an effort to reduce the number of crime stories in the media, an internal RCMP report obtained by The Vancouver Sun recommends. The report, prepared last year by the Mounties' B.C. communications section, argues the public has an irrational fear of crime, mainly due to the large number of crime stories in newspapers and newscasts. Those stories, the report found, are often sparked by RCMP news releases or comments from officers. ''The research indicates that public comments made by RCMP media spokespeople although well meaning may actually be contributing to fear of crime rather than reducing such fear,'' it states."
