"The Italian government approved legislation that halves the time it takes for immigrants to become citizens and grants automatic citizenship to children born of immigrants residing legally in the country. The measures are part of broader efforts on the part of Prime Minister Romano Prodi's center-left coalition to better integrate a growing immigrant population into an aging society increasingly dependent on foreign labor. In recent weeks, the government has announced that it would legalize the status of 350,000 immigrants from non- European Union countries who are already working in Italy, and last month it removed restrictions on workers from eight new EU member states. Under the new legislation, legal immigrants to Italy will be able to apply for citizenship after 5 years, instead of the current 10." [Immigration - Economic; Integration]
