"It's all about reputation," Tony Mitsinga, 20, told the Guardian. "The badder you are, the more reputation you get. The more reputation you get, the less likely anyone will mess around with you as you walk down the street." The Home Office - which has made Asbos a centrepin of its "respect" agenda - acknowledges that some young people feel Asbos conferred kudos, but says "the novelty soon wears off". So, should we abandon Asbos altogether? And if not, what can we do to make them less appealing to young people?
