"One of the main principles of Drug Court is that forced treatment does, in fact, work," Perlich said. "Probably better than voluntary treatment because it's forced on you. You have to do it." Participants-currently 39-are referred to drug court by any of a number of criminal justice professionals, including police officers, prosecutors and judges. Typically, they have been charged, but not yet convicted, with a drug crime-and possibly other crimes, Perlich said. They might be in some other Justice Sanction program as well, such as electronic monitoring or day reporting. They are tested frequently for substance use, often daily for drug use, sometimes twice a day for drinking."
