"THE Home Office is preparing to slash the budget for supporting asylum seekers by almost half, The Scotsman can reveal.

Under its plans, annual spending on housing and feeding asylum seekers will be cut by ?450 million - last year, the support budget was ?1 billion.

The proposals, which have never been revealed to parliament, are set out in technical documents submitted to the Treasury showing how the Home Office plans to meet government targets for ?1.9 billion in efficiency savings. "
